Do I see the world differently because I am an Artist? Or am I an Artist because because I am different.......? It's hard to say, and maybe I do not need to know. One thing is for certain though, I hope to connect with others through my Art. If something moves you in such a way to feel validated, connected, happy or feel something just in general.....it's worthy..Art is important...Art for the longest time was a way to process my world. Some call it Art Therapy. But as of late, I find my Art oscillates between several ways of creating........sometimes I revert back to the stylized line drawings of my youth, sometimes I like to paint from life but in vibrant color palettes, other times my imagination takes the wheel and paint gets pixelated from the applying the swatches of different colored brush strokes. I like oils, I like acrylics. I sometimes use myself as my own muse to move through subjects of interest. Stay tuned as I keep creating! Looking forward to the connections that can be made through Art!
Artist Statement:
Nature vs. Nuture, the age-old debate as to how you come to have the traits you have or even your attitude, disposition, ability or talent. I come from a woman’s lineage if you will, of painters; My Grandmother first, then my Mother and then myself. I do not ride on the curtails of my family’s talent, but it’s important to mention this first because if nurturing had anything to do with it, it was prevalent in the very early years of my life. As life goes on you find not only do you inherit certain “gifts” but there are learned habits for better or for worse that come along with the package deal. We can all be our worst critic, but along the way I’ve made it my personal “vendetta” if you will to stamp out harsh critique on myself an others and intern formulate some sense of healing through my Art for myself, my family and all creatives at large. But it’s more than that, you see, my art is comprehensive in that, not only is it a way to process, move forward and transmute, I’ve found it’s also a way to see, connect, flourish and thrive. I write poetry, I paint in oils and acrylics and intuit often through these mediums my next vision or piece. I have the strong foundation of a love for Art, I nurture myself and others through continually creating and keep my focus as best I can to create without fear. Art could be considered my love language.
About my Practice: What a journey it has been. From casting away a slew of journals when I was 15 or so, never to be seen again, to self publishing a book of poetry with an image of my Artwork on the cover. Much of my journey began on the inside. Work that wasn’t meant to be seen. I’ve been cultivating how to find the right words, how to capture or convey the right message and eventually learning to trust the process with more and more ease. I’ve always been interested in Art through family practice and it spilled out into the world around me. I remember going back to an old daycare asking an old teacher what was I like? She said I always wanted to do the art projects. I also have home videos of me as a toddler drawing with crayons on a high chair at the beach till the crayon wax began melting. I don’t remember this, but I do always remember creating. It seems to cliché to say I’ve always been creating for as long as I remember, but it is as true as any other person. If it’s any consolation to anyone who feels as though they haven’t been doing it long enough, I argue that we are all creative, how we express it is the difference. Some do it on paper, some do it through speech, some in the just the way they move in a room. Just because my creativity develops a physical, tangible object or piece doesn’t make anyone any “less creative” it just means I’ve been in a certain practice for a while and I’ve developed it, come to know it and trust in my abilities over time. I have stacks of 16 x 20 acrylic and oil paintings shelved up in my studio/basement area. 5 years ago I tried to be a working Artist full time. Attending many craft shows, art events and advertising as best I could through social media etc. It was picking up in my own personal funding through sales of Art. I was making a lot of connections but it wasn’t enough to remain sustainable at the time financially. I often wonder, had I just given it two or three more months? I’ve never given up on creating but I would like to take another stab and make more of a presence in the Art community a try again. Dare I mention that I would in time like to eventually try this again as a full time Artist. But why? I know what art does for me. There are some pieces of Art that have moved me in such a way that, if I can do that for another it’s worth it. Art moves in these inexplicable ways to our heart and soul that I long to be the giver, an Artist that values and understands this must continue. Currently I have a small but beautiful social media presence, I attend Art shows locally, if I can’t go I repost as to support the other artists and I collaborate when humanly possible with other creatives. I am a Mom of one, an avid supporter of the Arts and I paint, write and create regularly. I have self published a book titled “ A Plethora” and it is on Amazon in paperback. I have two social media presences on Instagram currently. I would like to develop both ways of being creative. The first is just as myself being an individual Artist, the other through a creative idea I’ve titled “ Fearless Focus”. In this developing idea I would offer cultivating creativity classes and workshops with a somewhat spiritual component honoring who a person is holistically and how they wish to show up creatively in the world. I have my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art. My Art Education cert isn’t current as I explored other fields throughout my life such as finance and client relationship type work that I did not complete the continuing education courses to keep that current. However the knowledge and training in the field hasn’t left.
